Statement on Annexation from Scottish Friends of Palestine
The issue of Israeli Government plans to unilaterally annex large swathes of the illegally occupied West Bank has been in the news over the last few months.
Annexation is illegal under international law. It involves the forcible and unilateral acquisition of territory over which it has no recognised sovereignty.
Annexation would follow on from years of land theft, displacement of Palestinians and illegal settlement building on occupied Palestinian land.
However at the present time the plan seems to have stalled – for now at least.
A number of countries have resisted the Annexation Plan. Germany has condemned the plan and even Boris Johnson has indicated opposition.
A number of United Nations officials have also labelled the plan illegal.
Scottish Friends of Palestine in common with a range of other organisations roundly condemns the annexation plan.
We would encourage all members and supporters to write or make contact with their MPs to register their concerns about the possibility of annexation.
When contacting MPs either in writing or verbally we suggest our members and supporters make the following points –
1 Ask your MP if they are aware of Early Day Motions 464 and 225 which raise concerns about the annexation plans.
Ask them to consider signing these motions if they have not already done so.
2 Ask your MP to also consider raising concerns about annexation directly with the Government.
Evidence suggests that a personalised contact with MPs is helpful in getting a response and highlighting issues.
Scottish Friends of Palestine would also wish to assure our members and supporters that we will continue to monitor developments in relation to these ill-advised Annexation proposal.
